Karla Carrillo competed in the national Nuestra Belleza Mexico 2008 pageant, where she obtained first place among thirty-two other contestants, thus making her the first Jaliscan to win the national title since Jacqueline Bracamontes in 2000. She was crowned by outgoing Nuestra Belleza Mexico titleholder Elisa Nájera of Guanajuato. Karla  Carrillo represented her country in the international Miss Universe 2009 pageant, held in Nassau, Bahamas on August 23 of that year. She failed to make the top fifteen.
